Blast from the Past This Summer

06-16-2006  Article by:

This year the award-winning Blast from the Past program for 8 to 12 year olds, conducted by the Marion County Historical Society, is ready to take children back in time to learn about Marion and its rich history. Each day children will participate in a learning event complete with hands-on activities, crafts, and refreshments at no cost.

Class is in session every Thursday from June 29 to July 27 in the Heritage Hall auditorium located at the corner of Church and State Street. Children can sign up for one of two daily sessions choosing either 9:30-11:30 AM or 1:00-3:00 PM.

This year’s topics are:

  • June 29 – “The War That Forged a Nation!” - Explore central Ohio life
    during the War of 1812
  • July 6 – “Wampum, Barter, and Banks, Oh My!” – Learn about the history of commerce and economics in Ohio
  • July 13 – “GI Joe and GI Jane” – Explore the United States Military Service branches
  • July 20 – “Faces of Ohio” - with guest presenter from the Harding Home, Sherry Hall. Discover the immigration experience, who came here between 1890 and 1920 and why they chose Ohio as a home
  • July 27 – “From Snake Oil to Cat Scans” – Discover the changing face of
    medicine in Ohio

Because space is limited registration is required. All sessions are free of charge. To register or for more information call the Marion County Historical Society at 740-387-4255 or e-mail mchs@marionhistory.com or mchist2@verizon.net.
