Elgin is seeking the public’s opinion on whether to seek state funds to build new schools or wait a year.

Superintendent Doug Ute said during a public work session that the district is eligible for funding from the Ohio School Facilities Commission. That funding could mean 55% of construction costs would be paid by the state.

Options proposed included a new building to house kindergarten through twelfth grades at a local cost of $16.3 million, a new 7th-12th building along with two new elementary buildings locally costing $17.8 million, and building a new high school along with one new elementary building at a local cost of $16.6 million.

All three plans would include grouping junior and high school together, as well as demolishing all current schools.

The debate comes amidst concerns of a $742,000 projected deficit next year.

The school board will discuss the options again on April 28th.
