On Sunday, April 27, from noon until 4:00 P.M., Trella Romine will welcome visitors to the gardens and woods around her home, Terradise. Daffodils, tulips and flowering trees and shrubs will be in full bloom. Paths lead along the riverbank among spring wildflowers including Virginia bluebells, wild blue phlox, spring beauties, trilliums, bloodroot and trout lilies. Thirty-five species of birds have been seen this year at the feeders near the house. Mallard ducks and Canada Geese are nesting near the pond. There are forty species of trees and shrubs in the area.
Terradise is located along the banks of the Whetstone (Olentangy) River about a mile southwest of Caledonia at 1536 Whetstone River Road North. From State Route 309 at Caledonia (8 miles east of Marion, Ohio) turn south on State Route 739. When this route turns to the left continue straight ahead toward the cemetery and around the curve to the second house on the left. Parking is across the road from the house.
Terradise was designated an Ohio Natural Landmark by the Department of Natural Areas and Preserves of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in 1990 for the diversity of trees, shrubs and local flora growing there.
The Terradise Nature Preserve is located across the river. Members of the Friends of Terradise Nature Preserve will give tours of the preserve starting at 4:00 P.M.
