Oil Hits Record High, Gas Prices Follow

04-23-2008  Article by:

For the first time in history, barrels of oil have hit the astronomical price near $120 per barrel. That price has sent local drivers into fits as the price of gas in Marion County rocketed up on Tuesday.

Drivers found the price of gas going from around $3.19 per gallon of gas to anywhere from $3.37 to $3.60. The cheapest places were Swifty and Valero on North Main Street. The most expensive price was seen at the Kroger’s on Delaware Avenue.

Around the country, the average price for a gallon of gas topped $3.50 for the first time in history.

Consumers are also being warned to expect an increase in the costs of foods and goods as the average price of diesel was a record-high $4.20.

Some gas stations, however, have added a text messaging feature which will alert drivers to impending price increases. Only one in Marion, however, offers that feature – Meijer.

Patrons can sign up for the message, which costs normal text messaging rates, and will be warned a couple of hours before the price is changed. You can sign up at www.meijer.com/text/.

The cost of regular has jumped by about 8 cents in 24 hours to Wednesday's statewide average of close to $3.48 per gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

Again, that's an average. Throughout Ohio, it's not difficult to find service stations selling regular for $3.59.

Ohio Auto Club spokeswoman Joanna Herncane (HURN'-kayn) says AAA believes prices could rise by another 25 cents over the next month, and gas of $4 per gallon isn't out of the question.

She says gas costs are soaring as investors push the price of oil closer to $120 a barrel.

If it's any consolation for Ohioans, gas is more expensive in every bordering state. West Virginia's average is about $3.63.
