Marion Man Sentenced For Firing Gun

05-07-2008  Article by:

Kimball C. Slappey, 35, was sentenced to three and one-half years in prison Monday after previously pleading guilty to a gun charge. Slappey appeared before Common Pleas Judge Robert Davidson for sentencing. Slappy pleaded guilty on April 3 to charges of possession of cocaine, attempted tampering with evidence, and a firearm specification.

The charges related to a January 8th incident on Girard Avenue, where officers heard a single gunshot, and found Slappey in the area in possession of a set of scales which contained cocaine residue. Officers also found a small handgun near where Slappey had been. The gunshot did not hit anyone or anything, and may have been shot into the air. Slappey claimed that the shot was accidental.

Slappey pleaded guilty to attempted tampering with evidence which related to his efforts to try to dispose of the gun after firing the shot and possession of cocaine which related to his possession of the scales with cocaine residue.

Slappey has remained in custody at the Multi-County Correctional Center since his arrest on Jan. 8. He will be transported to the Correctional Reception Center in Orient to begin serving his prison term.
