Marion General Hospital has relocated its cardiac and pulmonary rehab services. Previously located at the Marion Area Health Center, these services are now easily accessible on the first floor of the hospital, located at 1000 McKinley Park Drive.
As part of the hospital’s heart services, cardiac rehab uses exercise and education to help a heart patient reach their full potential. As the largest cardiac rehabilitation facility in our seven-county service area, Marion General Cardiac Rehab is the most comprehensive program of its kind between Columbus and Toledo.
Cardiac rehab is provided on an outpatient basis with participants typically spending six to 12 weeks in the program, attending cardiac rehab for approximately one hour a day, three days a week. And, as an added benefit, a spousal program is available which allows a spouse/loved one to participate in and help support heart patients during the exercise regimen.
Pulmonary rehab, also provided on an outpatient basis, includes a gentle, individualized exercise routine designed to increase strength and endurance in patients with lung disease, with a goal of gradually making daily activities easier. Participants meet as a group for eight weeks, three days each week for a total of 24 one-hour sessions.
In addition to the exercise programs, educational classes are conducted to help cardiac patients and their loved ones learn more about ways of reducing risk factors; how to better manage stress; eating a more heart-healthy diet and setting up an exercise plan for home. Pulmonary rehab education is provided on diseases such as asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis, and how to better manage symptoms. Information can include medication education and prevention of infection as well as energy conservation and stress management.
A physician’s referral is all that is needed to participate in cardiac or pulmonary rehab at Marion General. Staff members then work to design a program tailored to specific health needs.
