Elgin Parents Thank Teachers

05-30-2008  Article by:

Every day, teachers touch the lives of students, parents, and communities in significant ways. To show appreciation for their work and dedication, the Elgin South Elementary PTO celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-10.

Parents took time that week to thank teachers for the wonderful work they do. A total of 41 teachers and staff members at Elgin South Elementary were honored for being a guiding force in helping children develop into healthy, happy, and successful adults.

“Teachers at Elgin go above and beyond the call of duty to help our children learn and their extraordinary efforts are often unsung,” said Ingrid Britton, parent and Chair of Teacher Appreciation Week. “This week, we recognized the commitment and caring of teachers and school employees who truly make a difference in children’s lives.”

In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, the PTO had a food extravaganza for the teachers and staff members. Each day had a different theme, which included Salad Day, Hot Lunch Day, Picnic Day, Grilling Day, and Dips and Fondue Day. The teacher’s lounge also had a makeover with table linens, fresh flowers, and china and silver.

“We teachers also want to give a big thank-you to the PTO for their support and hard work during this week. It was without a doubt the best Teacher Appreciation Week ever,” said Nicole Sterling, fourth grade teacher. “It truly meant a great deal to all of us.”

Schools need a PTO and benefit tremendously because of one. PTO’s improve communication, boost children’s well-being, inform parents, and see measurable results. PTO programs are created to encourage and support parent involvement in children’s education. But, none of this can happen without the parent.

“We would like to invite parents to become involved in activities at the school and attend PTO meetings,” PTO President Jennifer Buchanan said. “By joining the PTO, parents get connected in their school, have the opportunity to speak up, and become a role model for their child. In doing so, you’ll benefit your child and also help your school.”

Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated during the first full week of May and National Teacher Day is celebrated every year on the Tuesday of the first full week of May. These celebrations provide an opportunity to both express appreciation and publicly recognize the important work that teachers do everyday.
