Sixteen teachers could lose their jobs in the Elgin School District following a plan announced by Superintendent Doug Ute. The cuts come as Elgin faces a $745,000 deficit in the 2008-2009 school year.
Up to eight of those teachers could come back to the school in new positions.
The Elgin Education Association, a union representing the teachers, believes the cuts are too much and not within the bounds of their contract with the school. That contract calls for cuts based on seniority. The Association does not believe that guideline was followed. Ute does.
The plan was unveiled following two months of meetings to discuss the budget crunch.
Other monetary considerations could be made before summer vacation is over. The district is talking about raising pay-to-participate fees as well as a November levy.
