Tomato Illnesses Affect Ohio 06-16-2008

A nationwide recall on tomatoes has been issued over the last two weeks due to salmonella. Now, Ohio has been added to the list of states with confirmed cases of the bacteria.

Three people in Franklin County have confirmed cases of salmonella linked to tomatoes. That brings the count to 23 states with cases.

The three ranged in age from mid-20s to mid-50s. Officials in Franklin County said the three did not appear to eat at the same restaurants but did eat out several time before becoming sick between May 21st and May 24th. All three have recovered.

Salmonella is fairly common, but the particular strain involved with the outbreak is rare.

Not all tomatoes are considered dangerous. Cherry and grape tomatoes, tomatoes with the vine still attached, home-grown tomatoes, and available Ohio-grown tomatoes are considered safe.

Salmonella symptoms usually appear 12 to 72 hours after infection and usually resemble the flu: headache, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. Salmonella can be fatal to children, pregnant women, and those with weak immune systems.
