The Salvation Army has hit a new record, but that's not necessarily a good thing. In July, both the Food Pantry and the Soup Kitchen served a record number of people.
The soup kitchen served 128 individuals on Monday July 28, 2008, then 117 on Thursday July 31, 2008. Not only was a record high set on Monday, a record high was also set for the week at 245 individuals.
The food pantry also serviced a record number of households, serving 280 households for the month of July for a total of 883 people. The previous high was set in April of 2007 at 223. “We have seen the number of people (who) need assistance increasing steadily over the last year,” says Major Jim Sayer.
“We greatly appreciate the support of all those who give in time, food, and money to keep providing these vital services. Donations of fresh produce in the coming harvest season will assist in providing good nutrition to those we help,” said Angela Long, Coordinator of Family Services.
These programs are also funded in part by the Marion County United Way.
