Emily Lydic captured the title of Miss Marion Popcorn Festival 2008 Saturday evening during competition at Harding High School. Nearly $3,000 in scholarship dollars and $3,000 in in-kind scholarships were awarded before a near capacity crowd.
By winning the Miss Marion Popcorn Festival title, Lydic earned a $1,000 scholarship. She also received the Festival crown and box, crown pin, banner, flowers, and numerous other gifts.
“I think I’m going to faint,” said a breathless Lydic as she was announced as the winner. She later said, “I’m not the kind of girl who wins pageants … never in a million years did I expect to win.”
Lydic garnered the Talent Award of a $75 scholarship. She also won the Interview award of $50, and the Academic Award.
Currently a senior at North Union High School, Lydic plans to use her scholarship monies to study neuroscience. The 17-year-old is the daughter of John and Joyce Lydic of Somesville.
As Miss Marion Popcorn Festival 2008, Lydic will reign over all Festival activities; including being highlighted in the Festival’s Orville Redenbacher Parade and performing from the main stage. She will also make numerous appearances throughout Ohio during the coming year.
A $500 scholarship sponsored by went to first runner-up Holly Musser. Her talent was a vocal presentation of “Red High Heels”. The daughter of Tony and Darlene Musser of Ada, Musser is a 2007 graduate of Ada High School and is enrolled at The Ohio State University pursuing a degree in nursing.
Charlotte Baird was second runner-up and received a $400 scholarship. She also snared the $50 Community Service Award. Baird is 2008 graduate of Harding High School. She will be attending Otterbein College majoring in music education. Baird is the daughter of Rick and Peg Baird of Marion.
Earning a $350 scholarship,and capturing the third runner-up position, was Morgan Candel. The 2008 Harding High School graduate with attend The Ohio State University at Marion. She sang “So Much Better” for her talent, and is the daughter of Chris and Linda Candel of Marion.
April Meyer took the fourth runner-up honors and a $250 scholarship. A senior at Pleasant High School, Meyer plans to study nursing upon graduation. Meyers performed an intricate baton routine to “Rumors” as her talent. Her parents are Joe and Karen Meyer of Marion.
Each of the five finalists are eligible to receive a $1,000 in-kind scholarship from Marion Technical College and a $500 in-kind scholarship from The Ohio State University at Marion. The four runner-ups also received a banner, flowers, and gifts.
