Marion Resident Honored By Ohio State

08-15-2008  Article by:

Marion resident Alice Galloway was recently chosen as a 2008 recipient of The Ohio State University Distinguished Service Award. She will be formally recognized at summer commencement on Sunday, August 24, 2008.

The Distinguished Service Award was established by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees in 1952 to recognize individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the university. Awards are not made on the basis of long, faithful, or loyal service alone, but rather for service that is truly distinguished. Recipients of this award have provided a broad spectrum of services to the university in both official and unofficial capacities.

Galloway's service contributions to the university date back to the beginnings of the Marion regional campus. Because of her continued involvement over the past fifty years, Ms. Galloway and her late husband Joe Galloway are recognized among a group of campus founders. As a proud alumna of The Ohio State University, Galloway began organizing campus life and student activities a few short years after Ohio State began offering classes at Harding High School in 1957. She was among the chaperones at the campus's first semi-formal dance and a member of the Mother's Club which co-sponsored the event.

In the 1960's, the Galloway's helped solicit contributions from individuals and organizations throughout central Ohio to generate $400,000 for the purchase of land that eventually became the Marion campus. The campaign exceeded its goal and the additional funds were used to establish scholarships for Ohio State Marion students.

Galloway was one of the first members of an all volunteer organization called the Buckeye Backers. Established in 1997, the Buckeye Backers have performed volunteer services for the betterment of the campus for over a decade. She has been involved in assisting with several annual campus giving and United Way fundraising campaigns, as well as volunteering time at athletic, academic, and cultural events on campus.

Galloway's most recent significant contribution was her service on Ohio State Marion's Golden Anniversary Planning Committee. She reviewed 50 years of newspaper articles and campus archival information, which she assembled into a working history of the campus.

Galloway earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech from Ohio State. She is a longtime member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association and the Marion County Chapter of the Alumni Association. She is now retired from a dedicated career of teaching in Marion City Schools.
