Tree lined streets and boulevards are beautiful site, especially with leaves changing color. However, when the leaves begin to fall, they can create hazards. The City of Marion says these hazards are the reason it is important to keep leaves on the tree lawn and not sweep them into the street.
Cars parking on top of dry leaves are a safety hazard because hot mufflers can allow dry leaves to ignite and cause fires. Another hazard involves wet leaves because they are slippery when cars, bicycles, and pedestrians try to navigate streets. Leaves piled in the street can also block storm drains and cause water to back up in the street during rain events.
The City of Marion is asking for help in preventing these hazards by keeping all leaves out of the street by sweeping them onto the tree lawn for collection by the City.
