Marion County Election Recount Continues

12-03-2008  Article by:

The recount continues at the Marion County Board of Elections.

The mandatory recount began Tuesday and Director Chris Smith says the recount could last until Thursday.

Mandatory recounts are being held in the race for Marion County Sheriff and a levy for Marion County Children Services.

Democrat Tim Bailey beat Republican Russ Rigney in the sheriff's race by 39 votes in the totals certified on November 25th. That difference easily fell in the ½ of one percent needed to mandate a recount as provided by state law.

Children Services saw their levy defeated by 130 votes.

The Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner also ordered a recount of presidential voting, which the Marion County Board of Elections are also counting.

No candidate asked for a recount. Any candidate can request a recount with a deposit of $50 per precinct required up front.
