New State Laws Start Today 07-01-2009

Several new state-wide laws take effect today. The laws include new speed limits for semi trucks, laws for wipers and tow trucks, and mandatory registrations for APV's.

Effective today, semi trucks will now be able to go the same speed as cars on interstate highways.  Currently, that speed is 65 miles per hour, although trucks were previously limited to 55.

Additionally, motorists now must move over or slow down when approaching a tow truck or utility repair truck with their yellow lights flashing.  Failure to do so could mean a $300 fine for first time offenders.

Headlights must now be turned on whenever windshield wipers are in use.

Also included are new laws focusing on APV, or all purpose vehicles.  APV’s, like snow mobiles and mopeds, now must be licensed and registration will move from $5 to $31.25.  Additionally, driving an APV on someone’s property could results in a fourth degree misdemeaner charge of criminal trespassing.

Law enforcement officers have the discretion to issue a warning or ticket for breaking any of the new laws.
