The Marion General Hospital Foundation celebrated 25 years of giving to the Marion community in September. In 1984, this Foundation accepted a lead role in the support of healthcare facilities and programs in the Marion community.
With a mission statement that reinforces dedication to obtaining charitable contributions, managing those funds and distributing those funds, the Foundation fully supports the Marion General Hospital mission of improving the health of those they serve.
Though gifts may be specifically designated, an unrestricted gift allows Foundation board members to use the money in areas with the greatest need. Unrestricted contributions to the Foundation are utilized for the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment, support of programs such as Marion General Hospital Hospice and Community Check Up screenings, and assist with upgrades to the hospital building as well.
“The Marion General Hospital Foundation work began with generous gifts from residents of this community,”¯ says Robert Columber, director of development for the Foundation. "Today, the generosity continues with contributions ranging anywhere from $5 up to $10,000 and more, and it is this giving spirit that keeps our work going."
One of the most visible projects that the Foundation continues to support is the beautification of the main entrance to the hospital. The Memorial Walkway and Gardens at the hospital are now surrounded with mature roses and trees, and include quiet sitting areas and a fountain. The area has become a retreat for those who need time to meditate and pray, or to just sit in the sunshine and listen to the soothing sound of flowing water.
Governed by an 11-member Board of Trustees, the Foundation is made up of business leaders, physicians and community representatives who oversee all fund-raising projects and manage the distribution of funds.
Donations, which carry a tax-deductible benefit, may also include gifts of life insurance or annuities, stocks and real estate.
