Group To Discuss Dementia, Depression

10-22-2009  Article by:

Caregiver Connections is a quarterly educational and support group for caregivers and others interested in learning more about Alzheimer Disease and other forms of dementia. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 5th, 11:30 AM – 1 PM, at the Marion County Council on Aging, located at 125 Executive Dr.

The topic for this month’s discussion will be presented by Dr. Carmen Skinner, DO.

The American Psychological Association estimates that nearly 20% of all older adults suffer from depressive symptom. While it is not a normal part of growing older, depression can lead to impairments in physical, mental and social functioning, and is often undiagnosed and therefore untreated.

Dr. Skinner will talk about the impact, assessment, and treatment of depression from a primary care physician’s perspective.

Caregivers will also learn to identify the early signs of depression, and about the local resources that are available.

There is no charge to attend the November Caregiver Connections, but reservations are necessary and space is limited. Lunch will be provided through the generosity of Kingston Residence of Marion.

The deadline to register is Monday, November 2nd. Contact the Council on Aging at 740-387-0401 for reservations and further information.
