The Marion Civic Chorus and Marion Civic Orchestra present their 68th annual performance of Handel’s Messiah Sunday, December 6 at 7 p.m. in the Marion Palace Theatre.
C. Gary Iams celebrates his 21st year directing both the chorus and orchestra. Soloists Lynette Burris (Soprano), Carolyn Redman (Alto), Dan Doty (Tenor), and Gabriel Vaflor (Bass) join with approximately 30 other vocalists in the chorus to bring Messiah to life.
Handel’s famous oratorio is written entirely in English and is very accessible even for those not familiar with the music. Handel completed Messiah in only 24 days during the summer of 1741. It premiered the following year at a music hall in Dublin, Ireland.
Few works are as well known as Messiah with its most recognizable tune being the powerful and stirring Hallelujah chorus, having brought audiences to their feet for centuries.
While long considered a Christmas tradition, Handel’s work was originally intended to be performed during the season of Lent and the sacred piece was written with theatre in mind.
This presentation of Handel’s Messiah is free to the public with donations being accepted.
