Huff Falls in Debut for Tribe

Nothing went the Indians' way in Sunday's 7-5 loss to
the Rays at Tropicana Field. Not even their successful complaint about the Tampa
Bay lineup. Manager Eric Wedge tried to make David Huff's Major
League debut a little easier when he pointed out to the umpires the faulty
lineup card turned in by Rays manager Joe Maddon. The Rays had both Ben Zobrist
and Evan Longoria listed at third base. After the top half of the first, when
Zobrist played third, Wedge called the error to the umps' attention, and, after
a 13-minute delay, the umps ruled that the Rays had forfeited their DH spot.
Andy Sonnanstine batted in Longoria's place in the No. 3 spot. But even Sonnanstine got a big hit off Huff in this one.
In just 3 2/3 innings of work, Huff was worked over for seven runs on seven
hits. The final blow came in the fourth, when Sonnanstine doubled home a run to
cap a five-run inning. The Indians' bats -- Ben Francisco, in particular --
tried to bail Huff out to no avail. Francisco homered twice off Sonanstine,
against whom he now has four homers in just seven career at-bats. Francisco's
latter blast was a two-run shot in the fifth that made it 7-5. Strong relief work from Greg Aquino and Matt Herges kept
the Tribe in the game, but a controversial call in the eighth hurt the Indians'
chances. With one out and none on, Ryan Garko hit a high fly to left that hit
the top of the padded wall and bounced back into the hand of left fielder Carl
Crawford. The umps were apparently under the impression that Crawford's glove,
not the wall, caused the ricochet, and they ruled Garko out. Wedge argued the
call to no avail. In the eighth, both benches cleared after Kerry Wood
threw one pitch behind B.J. Upton's back and another inside at the knees to
brush him back. Upton took issue with the pitches and began chirping with
catcher Victor Martinez, who had yelled at Rays reliever J.P. Howell earlier in
the series when Howell threw a fastball toward his head. Both benches cleared
but no punches were thrown. The Indians went on to their third straight loss to
close out this four-game set.
