Walks got the best of Fausto Carmona, but they brought
out the best in the Indians late in a wild, 11-10 win over the Rays at
Progressive Field on Monday night. Carmona lasted just 1 1/3 innings and forced the Indians
to dip into their bullpen early, with rough results. Carmona allowed five runs
on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts. In one stretch in the second
inning, 16 of 19 pitches went for balls, as Carmona walked four straight batters
to bring in the game's first run. More runs followed on Reid Brignac's two-run
single, B.J. Upton's RBI bunt single and Carl Crawford's RBI single. Down 5-0 in a hurry, the Indians turned to Jensen Lewis
for emergency relief, and the runs kept coming. Lewis served up a two-run homer
to Gabe Gross in the third and walked two batters in the fourth before giving up
an RBI single to Carlos Pena. Rich Rundles relieved Lewis and gave up an RBI
double to Ben Zobrist. The Rays loaded the bases and scored again when Rundles
hit Dioner Navarro with a pitch. All in all, it was an ugly effort early on from the
pitching staff, salvaged by Jeremy Sowers' strong showing out of the 'pen.
Sowers went five scoreless to give the Indians a fighting chance. The Indians, who had gotten on the board in the fourth
on Ryan Garko's two-run homer off David Price, made something out of that chance
late. They scored two more runs in the eighth and rallied in the ninth, when
Brignac's throwing error and Garko's three-run homer off Grant Balfour made it a
10-8 game. Asdrubal Cabrera, Ben Francisco and Jamey Carroll all walked to load
the bases, and Grady Sizemore drew a walk off Jason Isringhausen to bring in
another run. Victor Martinez then ripped a two-run single to center to win the
game.
