The Vikings were too much in the second half Sunday as
they scored 24 unanswered points and went on to beat the Browns, 34-20, in the
season opener for both teams.
Adrian Peterson ran for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns, and
Brett Favre threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Percy Harvin to push the lead to
24-13 late in the third quarter.
Peterson's 64-yard touchdown run with 5:58 all but
sealed it. Peterson had 155 yards in the second half.
The Browns led, 13-10, at halftime courtesy of a 67-yard
Joshua Cribbs punt return touchdown. Cribbs has now tied the franchise record
with 7 career return touchdowns.
The season's first points came courtesy of a 37-yard
Phil Dawson field goal, Dawson's 900th career point.
But the Browns were haunted by getting field goals
instead of touchdowns. An apparent touchdown pass from Brady Quinn to Braylon
Edwards in the second quarter was negated when a replay challenge showed that
Edwards failed to re-establish himself inbounds after being forced out on the
route.
The pass interference penalty gave the Browns first and
goal at the 6, but Cribbs was held out of the endzone on two straight runs as
the quarterback on second and third downs.
The Browns' offense got in the endzone on a 26-yard pass
from Quinn to Robert Royal with 28 seconds left.
Peterson went over 100 yards on a 19-yard run with 9:20
to go that moved the ball to the Browns' 12. The Vikings lost yardage on the
next three plays but pushed the lead to 14 on a 37-yard field goal by Ryan
Longwell with 6:55 left.
