Despite rallying from an early seven-run deficit, the
Reds still absorbed a 14-7 defeat to the Braves and were swept in the three-game
series.
Cincinnati finished its 10-day, nine-game road trip with
a 3-6 record and a five-game losing streak.
Reds starter Bronson Arroyo's 1 1/3-inning outing was
the shortest of his career. All seven earned runs he allowed crossed in a
lengthy second inning. He also gave up seven hits overall and one walk.
The Reds were in a 7-0 hole when Arroyo left with one
out in the second. After three innings, Atlanta led by an 8-1 score.
Braves starter Tom Glavine, in his first game back from
the disabled list with an injured hamstring, didn't last long enough to get the
win. Glavine gave up six earned runs, seven hits and five walks over 4 2/3
innings.
Paul Bako's third-inning home run off of Glavine put the
Reds on the scoreboard and a four-run fourth inning briefly made it a tight game
again. Following Joey Votto's RBI single, Adam Dunn smoked a two-run double
through the gap in right-center field. Jeff Keppinger's RBI single scored Dunn
and made it a three-run game.
In the fifth, with the score at 8-6, back-to-back
two-out walks loaded the bases for Dunn and gave the Reds a chance at the lead.
This time, Dunn swung at a first-pitch fastball from Royce Ring and flied out.
Atlanta pulled away again in the bottom of the fifth,
scoring four runs against relievers Josh Fogg and Bill Bray.
