Harang Just Good Enough In Reds' Win

Ace Aaron Harang allowed three early solo home runs but
the Reds came back and hung on for an 8-7 series-opening victory over the
Marlins on Monday night at Great American Ball Park. A pair of two-run home runs in the bottom of the seventh
inning by Jeff Keppinger and Brandon Phillips against Marlins reliever Taylor
Tankersley snapped a 4-4 tie. Corey Patterson had four hits in the game and
scored two runs as Florida's seven-game winning streak was snapped. For Harang, it snapped a five-start winless streak and a
rash of poor run support. The right-hander pitched seven innings and allowed
four earned runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Back-to-back one-out home runs in the Marlins first
inning by Jeremy Hermidia and Hanley Ramirez put Cincinnati in a 2-0 hole. The
deficit became 3-0 when Dan Uggla hit a solo shot to left field with one out in
the fourth. It was a one-run game in the Cincinnati sixth when Edwin
Encarnacion's double put runners on second and third. Adam Dunn's sacrifice fly
scored Joey Votto and Encarnacion scored on a wild pitch by Marlins rookie
starter Burke Badenhop while Harang batted. The Marlins tied the game in the top of the seventh, but
Patterson led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single between the mound
and first base. Next up was Keppinger, who hit a 1-0 pitch into the seats for
his third homer of the season. After a Ken Griffey Jr. walk, Phillips launched a
3-1 pitch 428 feet for his seventh home run of 2008. The game nearly got away from the Reds bullpen during a
three-run Florida eighth, in which nine hitters went to the plate. After one run
already crossed, closer Francisco Cordero was summoned early for a four-out
save. An error by Griffey allowed two runs to score, but that would be it for
the Marlins. Cordero returned for the ninth and notched his sixth
save of the season.
