Just a little dab will do ya when it comes to backing up
Indians' starters these days.
Paul Byrd didn't get much offensive help from his
teammates on Tuesday night, but he had no trouble keeping the Indians'
sensational string of starts going in a 4-0 win over the A's at Progressive
Field.
Byrd turned in 7 1/3 scoreless innings, extending the
Tribe starters' streak of scoreless innings to 34, dating back to the fifth
inning of last Friday night's game against the Blue Jays. Indians starters have
allowed just one run in their last 39 innings.
With the help of some outstanding defense behind him,
Byrd allowed just five hits with no walks and a season-high seven strikeouts in
those 7 2/3 innings of work. He left in the eighth, after second baseman
Asdrubal Cabrera, a day removed from an unassisted triple play, made an
incredible diving grab of a Bobby Crosby bloop to shallow center field for the
first out of the inning.
Byrd left with a 1-0 lead afforded him by Travis
Hafner's groundball RBI single off Justin Duchscherer in the first. That would
be the first and last run the Indians would muster off Duchscherer, who allowed
just four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
Shortly after Byrd left, however, the offense finally
awoke. Ryan Garko ripped a three-run homer into the Indians' bullpen off
reliever Andrew Brown in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.
