One of these days, an Indians starter will allow a run
again.
It's just hard to imagine when, given the way things
have transpired lately.
C.C. Sabathia kept the Tribe's incredible string of
starts going with a shutout of his hometown A's in a 2-0 victory at Progressive
Field on Wednesday night. That extended the Cleveland starters' streak of
consecutive scoreless innings pitched to 43 1/3, dating back to the fifth inning
of Friday night's game against the Blue Jays, which was Sabathia's previous
start.
Each member of the Tribe's starting five, then, has
turned in a scoreless outing in succession. The Indians were trying to determine
the last time that happened in the Majors. What is known, according to The Elias
Sports Bureau, is that this run is the longest scoreless streak put together by
a group of Indians starters since Bob Lemon, Gene Bearden, Sam Zoldak and
Satchel Paige threw consecutive shutouts in 1948 -- a stretch of 47 innings.
What was impressive about this particular outing is that
Sabathia (3-5) didn't even flirt with danger. Only twice did he allow a runner
to reach scoring position. He held the A's to just five hits with two walks and
11 strikeouts and only seemed to improve as the outing progressed.
Sabathia didn't need much help from his offense, and he
got just enough support to get by when Grady Sizemore homered off Joe Blanton to
lead off the bottom of the first and Ryan Garko added a solo shot in the fourth.
