Aaron Harang worked his shortest start of the season as
the Reds were roughed up in a 7-2 loss to the Pirates on Thursday night at Great
American Ball Park.
Harang's four innings matched the total he pitched in
emergency relief in an 18-inning Reds game at San Diego on Sunday. That outing
clearly affected him. The right-hander allowed six earned runs and 10 hits with
two strikeouts.
Most of the Pittsburgh damage came in the third and
fourth innings. In the third, Harang gave up three doubles, including RBI
two-baggers by Xavier Nady and Jason Michaels. In the three-run fourth, Jason
Bay hit a two-run homer to left field.
In the fifth with Jeremy Affeldt on in relief of Harang,
leadoff batter Nady drilled a first-pitch offering for a home run to right
field.
Former Red Phil Dumatrait turned in a superb start for
the Pirates. Dumatrait allowed just one unearned run and two hits over seven
innings, while striking out nine. Last season in six starts for the Reds, the
lefty was 0-4 with a 15.00 ERA.
The Reds' only run scored in the first inning. With one
out and runners on first, the Pirates tried to turn a double play on Brandon
Phillips' groundball to shortstop but Freddy Sanchez's relay throw sailed into
the first base dugout for an error that scored Jerry Hairston Jr.
Cincinnati's nine-game home winning streak, including
the first two games of the Pittsburgh series, was snapped with the defeat.
