The Tribe's season-long road trip couldn't have started
out much worse.
The Indians lost a second straight game to the Royals on
Sunday, 6-1. Before facing Cleveland, Kansas City had lost 12 in a row.
Paul Byrd gave up the lead early and never got his stuff
together. Jose Guillen hit a solo home run off Byrd in the second to give Kansas
City a 1-0 lead, and the Royals did most of their damage the next inning.
Alex Gordon doubled with two runners on, making it 3-0.
Then Guillen singled, scoring Gordon.
Byrd gave up a two-run homer the next inning to Mark
Grudzielanek. Byrd exited after 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs.
Kansas City's starter, Brian Bannister, was in control
the whole game, except for giving up a solo home run to Grady Sizemore in the
eighth. The Tribe hardly mustered any offense otherwise.
Leadoff doubles by Sizemore in the first inning and Ben
Francisco in the fourth gave the Indians about their only real other scoring
opportunities. They didn't capitalize either time.
Bannister gave up five hits and one run in 7 1/3
innings.
Cleveland now goes to Texas for a four-game series.
