Reds Fall Despite Bruce Effort
06-02-2008 11:34 pm

Rookie Jay Bruce had a 2-for-4 game, including another home run, but the Reds were handed a 5-4 loss by the Phillies on Monday night at Citizen's Bank Park.

Cincinnati fell behind by a 5-1 score through four innings as starter Bronson Arroyo gave up five earned runs and 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings.

In the bottom of the first, Chase Utley's two-run homer to right-center field gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead. It was Utley's Major League-leading 21st homer and his fifth in five games.

Bruce's third homer in three days, a solo shot to left field off Kyle Kendrick, got Cincinnati on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. But Philadelphia answered with three more runs off Arroyo, using back-to-back homers by Pedro Feliz and Chris Coste.

Over the first seven big league games of his career, Bruce is batting .577 (15-for-26) with three homers and seven RBIs.

Leading off the fifth, Edwin Encarnacion added a solo homer to left field for the Reds. Adam Dunn's two-run double in the sixth made it a one-run game.

Ken Griffey Jr. did not play in the game and remained at 599 career home runs.
