A two-out RBI double by Joey Votto in the top of the
seventh inning spoiled Brett Myers' hopes for a no-hitter, a shutout and a
victory in the Reds' 2-0 win over the Phillies.
Reds starter Edinson Volquez also pitched brilliantly
and emerged with a narrow victory. Volquez (8-2) pitched seven scoreless innings
and allowed only two singles with two walks and eight strikeouts. He also hit
two batters with pitches.
Until Votto, the closest Cincinnati had come to a hit on
Myers was Brandon Phillips' drive to the right-field warning track in the top of
the fifth. Myers had retired 13 in a row with the Phillips out but walked the
next three batters.
But the Reds didn't finally break through until the
seventh. Phillips drew a one-out walk from Myers and stole second base with Adam
Dunn batting. With two outs, Votto lined a high 0-2 pitch into left-center field
to score Phillips with the first run of the game.
Myers (3-7) finished with 7 1/3 innings and one earned
run and one hit allowed with six walks and eight strikeouts.
There was one out in the Phillies' eighth when Dunn lost
Chase Utley's fly ball to left field in the lights and dropped it for a two-base
error. Bill Bray struck out Ryan Howard. Closer Francisco Cordero walked Pat
Burrell but got a Geoff Jenkins groundout. Cordero pitched the ninth for his
12th save.
