The Reds picked up six runs with three homers in each of
the first three innings, including Ken Griffey Jr.'s 600th career dinger, and
split the four-game series against the Marlins with a 9-4 win in front of 16,003
Monday night at Dolphin Stadium.
The first of those three home runs was Griffey's
historic blast.
With a man on third and one out in the top of the first,
Griffey got a 3-1 hanging curveball by Marlins starter Mark Hendrickson and
deposited it into the right-field seats. The fan who caught the ball, identified
as Joe, has not decided what he will do with it yet.
Cincinnati knocked around Hendrickson in his 2
1/3-inning outing. After Griffey made it a 2-0 game, catcher Paul Bako -- who
also hit a two-run homer in the ninth -- hit a three-run homer to straightway
center field in the second, and Brandon Phillips homered to left-center to lead
off the third.
Reds starter Edinson Volquez went six innings, allowing
three runs -- the most of his career -- while giving up three hits, walking five
and striking out five. Jared Burton, Bill Bray and David Weathers combined to
pitch three innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen to end the game.
Reds shortstop Jerry Hairston left the game before
coming out for the bottom of the first because of a fractured left thumb.
