Dontrelle Willis gave the Indians every opportunity to
jump out to a big lead Monday night, and the Tribe was happy to take him up on
the offer.
The Indians rocked Willis for eight runs in the game's
first 1 1/3 innings, and the rest came rather easy for Cliff Lee and the bullpen
as the Tribe trounced the Tigers, 8-2, at Comerica Park to finish a tough road
trip on an uplifting note.
After Willis walked Ben Francisco and Victor Martinez in
succession in the first, Ryan Garko pounced with a three-run homer to left,
making it 3-0.
In the second, the Indians broke the game open. Willis
walked Casey Blake, and Kelly Shoppach followed with a two-run shot to left. The
Indians then loaded the bases against Willis, who handed the game over to
reliever Denny Bautista. Garko was plunked by a fastball in the back to bring in
one run, Jhonny Peralta drove one in with a single and Shin-Soo Choo scored
another with a sacrifice fly to center.
It all added up to an 8-0 lead that was safe in Lee's
hands. The two runs he allowed in the fourth would be all he'd give up in five
innings of work interrupted by a 57-minute rain delay in the fifth inning.
The Indians went 5-6 on their 11-game swing through
Kansas City, Texas and Detroit. It was their longest trip of the year.
