The Indians made a roster move involving their
beleaguered bullpen on Monday, but it wasn't a move they expected or wanted to
make.
Right-hander Tom Mastny was called up from Triple-A
Buffalo to take the place of right-hander Scott Elarton, who was indefinitely
placed on the restricted list.
Elarton, who arrived with the club in Chicago on Sunday
night, called manager Eric Wedge on Monday to inform him he had to leave the
team for personal reasons.
Wedge did not wish to divulge the specifics of the
situation to the media, saying only that Elarton, who was 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA in
eight appearances as the club's long reliever, returned to Cleveland on Monday.
"There's not much I can say," Wedge said. "He has some
personal things he has to take care of. There's nothing I can say outside of
that."
Wedge, however, could say plenty about how well Mastny
has been pitching with the Bisons. This will be Mastny's third stint with the
big league club this year. He was last seen making a brief and disastrous spot
start in Texas on June 3, but he recovered quite well in the Buffalo bullpen.
Mastny did not allow an earned run in nine June appearances.
The Indians had called on Mastny to make the spot start
against the Rangers, in which he gave up five runs in 1 1/3 innings, when Jake
Westbrook was a late scratch with an elbow injury that led to Tommy John
ligament replacement surgery.
"That was a tough spot for ," Wedge said. "He
really took one for the team. He did a great job going down and staying focused
on what he needed to do to get better. He really earned the opportunity to get
better."
For the season at Buffalo, the 27-year-old Mastny was
1-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 19 appearances. He struck out 34 and walked eight in 26
1/3 innings while limiting the opposition to a .211 average.
In promoting Mastny, the Indians passed on at least two
other noteworthy candidates -- Jensen Lewis, who has held the opposition
scoreless over his last four innings, and Brian Slocum, who has allowed just one
earned run over 12 innings in six appearances since being moved to the 'pen
earlier this month.
