City of Marion
Fill the Bin, We'll Use It Again!    Jack L. Kellogg, Mayor

[ How and What to Recycle ]

Why Recycle?

Each resident of Marion generates an average of 4lbs. of waste everyday. In a year, this totals 50.5 million lbs. As the amount of trash being thrown away each year increases, so also does the cost to collect it, haul it and landfill it. Recycling is the best way to reduce waste, stretch our resources and maintain a reasonable refuse collection rate.
Recycling also:
  • saves energy
  • conserves natural resources
  • reduces litter
  • reduces pollution because manufacturing using recycling material is cleaner
  • creates jobs
  • helps our economy
  • can reduce the amount of land needed for landfills, freeing more land for parks, farms and homes for people and wildlife
  • reduces the amount of environmental damage caused by landfilling
How to Recycle
Recycling uses only a small amount of space and requires only a few seconds a day. Each household, including each apartment, will receive one free hard plastic recycling bin to store recyclables in the home. On your regular garbage pickup day for your neighborhood, the bin should be placed at curbside. No need to separate the newspapers, plastic, aluminum cans or glass.
Carry-out services will be provided for the handicapped who are unable to place their bin at curbside. Just call the City Garage at 382-1479 to get your address on the list.
Every household is required to participate in order to make the program work. Every pound of material recycled helps us keep your sanitation bill at the lowest possible cost.
Materials not accepted
  • cardboard
  • any paper except newsprint
  • metals
  • mirrors
  • windows
  • plastic bottles with openings no longer than container
  • light bulbs
  • dome glass
  • Nos. 3 thru 7 plastic containers
  • textiles
  • undelivered newspapers

Billing
The City bills residential customers every two months for storm sewer, sanitary sewer, sanitation, and recycling services. Each bill is due 14 days after the bill date. Direct Payment is also available for paying your utility bill. If you have questions concerning your utility bill or Direct Payment please call us at 387-5939.
Message from the Mayor:
As a Marion resident, you are part of the weekly Curbside Recycling Program. Landfill capacity everywhere is dwindling and at the same time dumping fees are increasing. We can no longer afford NOT to recycle. Your participation is a necessary part of the solution to the ever growing problem of solid waste disposal and your cooperation is most important in making this recycling program a success. Future generations, including your grandchildren, will thank you for helping to make the earth a safer place to live.
