May 2003, setting Records
05-11-2003 11:20 am

New records are being set for angry weather across the country. Tornadoes by the dozens have brought have produced millions of dollars of damage and a multitude of deaths.  At the same time the weather is violent, the invisible atmosphere is also producing its share of interstellar radiation storms originating on the Sun. The two could be related, but science has not confirmed the incidence of violent weather being related to solar winds.

On May 20 the Marion County Senior Citizen Day observance will feature a dinner at Tri Rivers Career Center followed by the appearance of President Warren G. Harding and his wife Florence. Jeff Ruth will emcee the show and I will portray President Harding. The famous Craig Schirml of the Cleveland area will portray Florence. He is a noted re-enactor of the wives of United States Presidents. The program has been sold out for sometime.

The same week will feature of dinner honoring John Fark, retired 4-H Agent of Marion County. John had been the agent since 1972. John's years of service have been exceptional since most 4-H Agents never attain that many years serving the same county.

On May 17 a Forge Day will be held in Sulphur Springs, Ohio just northeast of Bucyrus. There will be hands on demonstrations of blacksmithing, which will enable those attending to learn something about the trade. The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until 5:00 p.m. Food will be available on the grounds which will be the Hope Church of Sulphur Springs. I do some blacksmithing but have been stymied by the lack of coal. Mot blacksmiths today are using natural gas. It is cleaner of course, but coal lends a greater atmosphere to the process and can be a skill all its own in managing a good hot fire.

June7 will be the Crawford County observance of the Ohio Bicentennial. The event will take place all day long at the Lowe-Volk Park on State Route 598 at Leesville. The park area is on the south side of the Sandusky River at the site of the capture of Colonel Crawford in 1782. There will be numerous re-enactors on hand including Indians, civil war troops, and early American craft demonstrations. The new education building at the Lowe-Volk Park will feature nature displays and there will be experienced personnel on hand to answer questions. I will be demonstrating my shinglemaking trade. Leesville is located a few miles north of Galion.

Most of the migrating flocks of birds have arrived. The house wren came back just after the first of May. From our back porch I have spotted brown-headed cow birds, chipping sparrows, nesting wood ducks, humming birds and countless other birds. We live near a good thermal where buzzards congregate every day seeking higher altitudes.

Being retired, I have been beating a path to the bike trails and fishing spots as well as observing the day-to-day living patterns of the many wildlife creatures in our area. It certainly is loads of fun and costs nothing.

Be sure you enjoy spring. Stop and smell the roses, just make sure they are the wild type. These give off the utmost in fragrance.
