What and Why
07-19-2007 10:36 pm

A few introductory lines to explain what this column is intended to be and, why.

In March of this year I began doing a one-hour, one night per week radio program on WDCM, Marion's community radio statio.

I retired in 1995 from a career as an Intelligence Analyst in, and for, the Department of Defense.  For years, everyday was spent researching, examining and analyzing political and economic data from a multitude of sources.

The plan was to bring that analytical experience to a radio program that would address all manner of issues of interest to the citizens of Marion.  Local, state, national and, even international issues would be covered.  The goal is not to persuade the citizens of Marion that they should adhere to any one political philosophy or ideology but, to present a reasoned approach to information that I think well informed citizens ought to give consideration.  Hence, the program name:  The Voice of Reason.  I present information sometimes through group discussions, sometimes through one on one interviews with people in the public eye and, sometimes simply through the presentation of information I believe to be relevant.

After four months of one hour, one night per week programs, it became clear to me that one hour, one night per week was insufficient to present the quantity and quality of information I felt I should present.

I lobbied the management of WDCM for more time.  I asked for two hours per night, two days per week.  After some discussion, we agreed that The Voice of Reason would be extended from one to two hours but still, only one night per week.  In additiion, I was offered the opportunity to write a column for Marion On Line.  I happily accepted.  Here I am.

It is my intent, at a minimum, to do one column per week. More, if I feel the need to address something in a more timely manner.

I don't pretend to be psychic, I cannot foresee every subject that the readers may wish to have addressed.  Please feel free to make suggestions.

My first column, other than this introductory piece, will be on the topic of Citizen Involvement in Marion's Future.  That column will appear soon on this site.

In the meantime, join me each Thursday at 7 PM on WDCM Radio, 97.5 FM.  This Thursday, July 26, I will welcome Dave Claibourne, Director of Marion Can Do as my guest.  I'm very anxious to find out what it is and what he does.  I've heard both good and bad things about Marion Can Do.  I'm looking forward to finding out for myself.  Please Join me.
