Sheriff’s Office Issues 12 Layoff Notices
Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey announced Wednesday that layoff notices were issued to 12 deputies on Tuesday, December 6. The layoffs are a result of dwindling tax revenues which caused the County Commissioners to cut the sheriff’s office’s 2012 budget. While the cut was considerable, it was less than the cut received by other county departments.
Bailey said that residents should expect to see longer response times to many types of calls. He also stated there may be no response to minor, non-violent calls and calls for service. Some of the calls will be handled by phone, email, and Facebook.
The sheriff said there will be a response to emergency calls and reports will be made on all calls.
In a media release, Bailey asked residents for their patience and understanding “during these difficult times.” He said if revenue becomes available, deputies will be called back. He warned though that if economic conditions remain the same or worsen, more layoffs are expected.
In addition to the layoffs, two helicopters that were obtained from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are being transferred to the Illinois State Police. Bailey said they were obtained in an attempt to improve the local air unit and to work with other agencies to make aircraft available. The sheriff’s office has receive some contract money for aircraft work in the past.
The cuts all come following the defeat of the half percent sales tax increase in November. The Marion County Commissioners said the increase would have eliminated the cuts that are causing the layoffs.
