Marion YMCA Offering Lifeguard Training

YMCAThe Marion Family YMCA is offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class, which they say will teach you the necessary skills to gain employment anywhere as a lifeguard. The class will run August 7 through August 12, 2014.

To become certified, you must attend all course sessions, participate fully, and pass all physical tests and evaluations with a grade of at least 80%. Refunds will not be given to those who do not pass or participate.

The class is limited to 12 participants. Classes without at least 6 class members may be cancelled.

Prerequisites for the class include:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke, and 100 yards of either.
  • Swim 20 yards by front crawl or breaststroke. Dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet and recover a 10 pound object. Return the object to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object. This must happen in a time of 1:40 or faster.
  • Age at least 15 years old by the first day of classes.

Class registration is $225 for YMCA members and $250 for non-members. The fee includes a student manual.

Class schedule will be:

  • Thursday, August 7th, 4pm-8pm
  • Saturday, August 9th, 10:00am-6:00pm
  • Monday, August 11th, 2:00pm-6:00pm
  • Tuesday, August 12th, 4pm-8pm

Participants should bring a towel, swim suit and food/snacks for themselves during the class. Quick lunch breaks will be taken each day.
