Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a three vehicle fatal crash that occurred on August 14, 2014. The crash, which claimed one life, took place at approximately 2:30 pm on Pole Lane Road, just south of Patten Pike in Marion County.
The crash involved a 2011 Ford Focus driven by Angelica L. Dye, 20, of Marion. Lynn Ann L. Matheny, 20, of Marion was the right front passenger.
The second vehicle was a 2004 Ford Expedition driven by Sarah E. McDonald, 30, of Caledonia. She had seven passengers. Emma McDonald, 12, Richie McDonald, 10, Will McDonald, 8, Norah McDonald, 4, Leah McDonald, 3, Sam McDonald, 2, and Josie McDonald, 6 months.
The third vehicle was a 1977 BMW R75/7 motorcycle driven by, Alfred T. Dietrich, 69, of Marion.
The Patrol said that the BMW motorcycle was southbound on Pole Lane Rd. one tenth of a mile south of Patten Pike. The Ford Focus was northbound on Pole Lane Rd. The Ford Expedition was northbound behind the Focus. The Ford Focus attempted to turn left into a private drive and failed to yield for the BMW. The BMW struck the Focus on its right side. Dietrich was ejected from his motorcycle and he struck the Expedition and came to rest on the roadway.
Dietrich was taken to Marion General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Matheny suffered minor injuries, but was not transported. Dye, McDonald and her 7 passengers were not injured. All occupants of the Focus and Expedition were wearing their seatbelts and/or child restraints. Dietrich was wearing his protective helmet.
The State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Marion County Sheriff’s Department, and Marion Township Fire.
The crash remains under investigation and toxicology results are pending.
