Gov. Kasich makes pitch for shift in tax structure during State of the State address

Ohio Governor John KasichGov. John Kasich made clear Tuesday that while he thinks the state has come a long way in the last four years, he has no intention of taking his foot off the gas.

“We’re on the move. We’re rising,” Kasich said in his State of the State Address. “It all starts with a strong economy.”

Toward that end, Kasich made a strong sales pitch to lawmakers to support new proposals in his budget plan, particularly those that would further lower the state’s income tax rates.

The changes, Kasich said, will further help to strengthen Ohio’s economy, he said.

“Low taxes signal to job creators that Ohio is a safe place to invest,” Kasich said. “I want to send a message that if you want to start a small business, if you want to be an entrepreneur … do it in Ohio.”

Kasich, at times talking directly to lawmakers, also pitched other aspects of his budget.
