Doris Elizabeth “Betty” James, 94, of Marion

Doris Elizabeth “Betty” James, age 94, passed away peacefully at Genesis Presidential Center on Tuesday, June 14, 2016.

She was born November 18, 1921 in Columbus, Ohio to Charles Trafford and Alice May (Simms) Wheaton.

She graduated from Harding High School in 1939 where she was in the National Honor Society.

Betty married Robert W. McCombs in 1941 and they had three daughters who survive; Janet Gail McCombs of Millersburg, OH., Merrill Beth Cooper- Bender (Bill) of Marion, OH., and Nan Lorrraine Klempnauer (Gary) of Columbus, OH. Also surviving are grandchildren; Christopher Michael Yeoman, Brittany Lorraine Yeoman Haske, and granddaughter; Brianna Lorraine Haske, all of Columbus, OH.

In 1959 Betty married Glenn “Willard” James, now deceased.

She was also preceded in death by a half brother; Charles T. Wheaton.

Betty worked as a secretary at Central Soya and while there, she earned Secretary of the Year award. She retired in 1980 as personnel manager of the Wyandot Popcorn Companies. She was one of the first female board members of the YMCA. She was a PTA President and City PTA Council President. She was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for many years. Betty and Willard enjoyed boating, traveling, camping, and playing bridge. They spent the summers traveling, camping with friends, and going to their mobile home at Lake Erie. For 20 years, they spent winter months in Rockport and Mission, Texas. In later years, Betty enjoyed the activities at the Marion Senior Center. For the past three years, Betty lived at the Kingston Residences.

A memorial service will be observed on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at Kingston of Marion, 464 Jamesway. Visitation is at 10:00 AM until service time at 10:30 AM. The family thanks the staff at Kingston, Genesis Presidential, and Heartland Hospice for their love, support and care of Betty.
