SNOWBLIND
Have you ever driven down a road when there's just a light wisp of snow blowing across it? The snow's mannerism is much like a snake in the way it slithers back and forth coiling and recoiling on it's way. It seems so serene, almost mesmerizing in the way it whispers across the surface so effortlessly, just floating above the ground but not touching it. It's path seemingly unhindered except for the on chance occasions a bit of ice or chunk of snow might be deposited in it's pathway. In this case, very quickly those few wisps of snow start to anchor themselves to the obstruction in it's way. Moment by moment their gathering increases in size as they start to assemble. If left unchecked this process will continue long into the night while everyone is asleep. While everyone is unaware, the wind proceeds to blow those few wisps of snow into something else.
As the morning approaches, and the Day appears, it sheds light upon the wind's new creation. By the light of the new morning the snow's new nature is revealed. For what seemed so beautiful and innocent the day before has become something much more formidable. What was once something that was visually enticing has now become a vision of dread. Those few wisps of snow have formed by the wind into a snow drift with the potential to detain and destroy all who would unwittingly drive into its trap.
Just as it is in nature, so it is in the hearts of mankind. In this illustration of nature you are given glimpse of the intentions of sin. This same vicious scenario is found to hold true in our lives. For like the snow, sin roams around in the winter of our depravity. It scours the surface of our hearts looking for a place to anchor itself. It attaches itself to pride and grows exponentially. It searches out for self justification and rationalization and it flourishes. Sin whispers out to us about our own righteousness and we become our own gods. Just like those few wisps of snow, sin always seems so innocent at first, beautiful in it's image, enticing and seductive. It convinces us that it will bring no harm, that it's just small and insignificant.
With a constant fervor sin seeks out our weaknesses to exploit them. It ripens abundantly in the lives that have gone in to a "spiritual slumber." Those lives that have allowed it to prosper while they are unaware of it's immanent danger.
Just like the snow that builds up to block the drivers way, so will sin block the path that leads to God. Left unchecked and unrepented will create an impasse, one that cannot be crossed without it's nature and purpose being confessed before God. But the Lord is faithful in his goal for his children to grow up in the likeness of Christ. He wants us to be fully aware of the implicit danger of sin. Rejecting it in all of it's forms so that we might approach his throne in good conscience, holy and pure by the power of the Cross. God want us to" throw off everything thing that hinders and the sin that s easily entangles." Heb 12:1 If we are careful to do this God will clear our way and set our path straight for him.
