I find myself in a trend where I have learned something about myself, I would rather give up some benefits and spend a little extra money to support things and people I believe in. A sense of community is always a plus.
Quick examples:
Health Club – The health club I work out at is not the top notch facility of our area. It’s older, the equipment is not state of the art, and it gets a little toasty in there. Think “Average Joe’s” gym in the movie, Dodgeball. However, my trainer is a good friend who actually cares about my health. The other people in the gym have a great rapport with one another as we feel we are part of something. The finances I put into the training is worth it not just for my health but as I support my friend.
I am saddened when I hear some of his stories of people he has invested into and worked so hard to reach just so they could walk away to go to the newer, trendier places because of the social status of that place or a “special” they were having. I prefer to support my friend and make the relationships with the few at the club.
Independent Stores – Maybe it’s because I own an independent store thatstruggles that I am more sensitive to this. However, I will always support a local independent store over a big box store whenever possible. Whenever you shop a store because it saves you $1.29 or 5 minutes of time, you make a conscience choice to not support the local guy who worked so hard within your community. A little more money or an extra trip to support a real person and his family instead of feeding the money machines of our world….priceless.
Church – In the same way, I know I could leave The Shepherd’s Fellowship and pastor another church for more money, more resources, and more people. Until God makes it very clear that He is leading me to make a move, I am very happy right where I am. I love the people. I love the community feel. I love the real relationships with all their pros and cons. I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ll leave that to God…..
