The WMRN/WYNT American Red Cross Radiothon — a 12-hour fundraiser – will be held Thursday, May 12th. This annual event, a major source of funding for the local chapter, will be broadcast live on WMRN AM 1490 and WYNT Majic 95.9 FM from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Clear Channel Marion, the primary event sponsor, will help sell a variety of donated items by describing them on the air. Meanwhile, phone bank volunteers will accept bids and pledges called in by listeners.
Auction items include: fine jewelry, memorabilia autographed by sports legends, a gas grill with a selection of meats and sauces, gourmet cupcakes, bagged mulch, framed artwork, a college tuition certificate, emergency radios, pizzas and a whole-hog barbeque that provides the main dish for up to 100 guests. Virtually all of the merchandise represents contributions from Marion-area businesses and individuals. This year’s auction lineup is anchored by a Whirlpool Cabrio laundry pair donated by the men and women of the Marion Division of Whirlpool Corporation. The appliances are valued at $1,348.
Prospective bidders can preview many of the auction items by going to the Facebook page for the American Red Cross — Marion County (Ohio) Chapter (www.facebook.com/marionredcross.org). One need not be a member of Facebook to view page content. Click on the “Photos” link on the left side of the page and choose “WMRN/WYNT American Red Cross Radiothon — 2011 Auction Catalog.”
Anyone not making a purchase is encouraged to consider a pledge. Steam Turbine Alternative Resources and the MCI Branch of the American Red Cross – Marion County Chapter are both contributing at the Clara Barton Society Level of $1,000 or more this year. However, financial gifts of any size will be put to use.
Local business, organizations and individuals also boost Radiothon revenue through third-party fundraisers known as "Heroes" projects. For example, the staff of the Marion County Auditor’s Office collected $697.45 through sales of donated baked goods and candies. Marion Racquet & Athletic Club, in partnership with Lawson Chiropractic Center, organized the inaugural Cabin Fever 5K Road Race and raised $300. Students at Heritage Elementary School contributed small change for the privilege of wearing “silly hats” to school. Their project added up to $131.42. Local 4-H member Jon Townsend has pledged 16 percent of the sale price of his market hog at the 2011 Marion County Jr. Fair Livestock Sale and has challenged other Jr. Fair exhibitors to make similar contributions.
Anyone wishing to make a bid or a pledge may call the Radiothon phone bank’s dedicated line – 740-725-0099 – between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on May 12th.
