Betty J. Staley, age 87, of Mount Gilead, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon, October 23, 2012, at the Morrow Manor Care Center in Chesterville.
On June 17, 1925, Betty was born in Wakeman, Ohio, the daughter of the late Bryan and Edna Rose (Ferguson) Taylor.
She was raised in Delaware County, where she graduated from Ashley High School in the Class of 1942. She still enjoyed attending her class reunions, recently going to her 69th reunion.
Shortly after graduating, Betty eloped to marry Albert “Buck” Staley in Maysville, Kentucky, on June 22, 1945. They shared over forty-five years of marriage, and he preceded her in death on March 11, 1991.
For several years, Betty worked as a clerk for Taylor’s Market in downtown Mount Gilead until it closed. Later, she worked as an aid at the Chesterville Convalescent Home, which would become Morrow Manor Nursing Home, caring for their residents until she retired in 1981.
An avid crafter, Betty would make crafts all year long to take to craft shows, going to six to seven shows a year, where she would set up her “Betty’s Crafts” displays. She made all kinds of little gifts, many of them having flowers in them.
A woman of faith, Betty was a member of the Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church. She also had been a member of the Rose Twig Club, volunteering for Morrow County Hospital.
Snowbirds, Betty and Buck enjoyed wintering in Frostproof, Florida, where they loved fishing and spending time with family and friends.
Extremely independent, Betty most enjoyed being in her home where she had lived the past 67 years, where for many years she enjoyed tending to her flower garden. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles with her “adopted son”, Jesse.
She will be missed by her daughter, Sandy (Duane) Creasap; a daughter-in-law, Annette Staley, both of Mount Gilead; four grandchildren: Dale Creasap of Cardington, Beth (Scott) Martin of Edison, Gary (Heather) Staley Jr. of Urbana, and Brian (Dusten) Staley of Tennessee; six great grandchildren: Dustin and Ryan Creasap, Zachary and Alyssa Martin, Parker and Tilman Staley; three great-grandchildren: Bryce, Shelby and Riley Creasap; special friends: Jesse Brown and Carol Hadburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her son, Gary Staley in 2002; two sisters: Mona Fleming and Mable Sears; and a brother, Delno Taylor.
The Staley family will greet friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2012, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services honoring her life will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
