Many of you have heard me say “I don’t talk a lot about politics” and then it appears I actually do. So, let me be a little clearer, I don’t get involved in a lot of the angry, political bashing and what not but I do address attitudes and side issues. That said, there is one side note that I have been exploring but just now am I at a point of really exploring it out here after hearing from different people and their views.
As Christians, I believe and encourage we vote from our Christian beliefs. I love the dedication to protecting “Christian values”. I love that people are passionate about our beliefs and political system. If you are voting for any candidate because you feel they support your Christian values, that is great.
That said, I do want to address when I hear conservative Christians saying they are voting for Mitt Romney because “we need God back in the White House”.
Mitt Romney is a Mormon. There are multiple differences between Mormonism and Christianity that leave us with the understanding that they are not the same and do not worship the same gods. Does that mean you do not support him as president? That depends on what view you are bringing to you decision process I guess but be cautious. We can be championing a candidate as aligned with God when it compromises our message of the truth of Jesus Christ. This is not good.
I believe Mitt Romney is a good man rather or not you agree with him. I think he mirrors many “Christian values”. I think he is committed to his faith (more than other candidates over the years that claim a religion to get a vote). I think he does many wonderful things family wise and faith action wise. However, if I’m right or wrong on these points, it does not change the purpose of this post.
Our mission is the Great Commission. We lead people to the Lord, baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and teach each other the life of following Christ. Let’s not weaken our definition of God in a day where it’s easy to do so by putting Mormonism and God in the same boat.
Last night, Mitt Romney was in our little city in Ohio for a rally and many wonderful people went out to see him. That is great! However, on Facebook after, some were talking about it like it was almost a religious experience. This was a tad concerning.
The band for the night was the Oak Ridge Boys (who are awesome) and they sang “Amazing Grace” (which is AWESOME!). However, the main thing I thought was we need to be praying for Mitt Romney that he can experience that amazing grace through Jesus Christ as well as millions of others in our mission fields all around us.
This is one of those posts were I don’t think I’m making a clear point and I’m more thinking it out as I type so maybe it’s not ready for posting yet like I thought. However, it may be this is a self conversation that I’m inviting you to think about too and it doesn’t need a final point from me. Just something to get the thoughts going.
Let’s just be careful not to have the Truth and then present someone as a champion for God when they don’t know Him (yet).
