Jackson H. Taft, age 99, a long-time resident of Marion, died on October 25, 2012 at his home in the Windsor Senior Living Community in Dallas, Texas.
He was born on February 21, 1913 in Cambridge, Massachusetts to the late Roger and Edna (Dougherty) Taft.
On October 19, 1940, he married Marcelle Perkins who died on August 29, 2001.
He is survived by a sister, Eleanor Fernald of Lincoln Center, Massachusetts; a daughter, Jacquelyn T. Lowe of Dallas, Texas; a son, Bradford H. Taft of Scottsdale, Arizona; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are a brother, Winthrop Taft, a sister, Cynthia Lathrop, and a son, Roger Gilman Taft.
Mr. Taft received a Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a Master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He began his career with the accounting firm of Ernst & Ernst in Boston, Massachusetts, then moved to Marion in 1948 and was one of the first employees of Fulfillment Corporation of America (acquired by Kable Corporation) where he served as Treasurer until he retired in 1985.
He held a strong belief in community service and was an active member and served as president of Lions Club, George Washington P.T.A., Eber Baker P.T.A., United Way of Marion, American Cancer Society of Marion, and the Marion Country Club. He served on the Board of the Marion Public Library and was a founding member of the Friends of the Library. He was a Deacon and Elder of First Presbyterian Church.
He kept physically fit throughout his life and played tennis and golf well into his 90’s.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 3, 2012 at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center St., Marion from 4PM to 7PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Marion Public Library or the American Cancer Society.
