The River Valley FFA chapter recently competed in the Sub-District and District competitions in Food Science.
The Sub-District competition for the Food Science CDE was held at Buckeye Valley High School on November 6, 2012. Logen Willey, Ashleigh Persinger, Taylor Lauer, Taylor Seckel, Katie Bayles, Amanda Jackson, and Kayla Edington all competed in this event. The River Valley FFA chapter placed fourth in this competition.
The contest consists of multiple tests of food safety and identification skills that the students have studied and practiced. The students are asked to use their senses to identify different aromas and determine the single different product out of three choices. They also have to write a response to a complaint letter, and identify different improper uses of GMP’s (Good Manufacturing Practices) through a series of pictures shown.
Because of their results at the Sub-District competition, the group qualified for the district level of the food science CDE. This level consists of four members from each school who compete at a higher level of taste testing, writing a response to a complaint letter, and identifying scents and Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP’s).
Amanda Jackson, Taylor Lauer, Katie Bayles, and Kayla Edington made up the River Valley team which placed fourth in the competition. Unfortunately, only top two teams moved on from this competition.
