Ella Murphy, age 74, of Mount Gilead, died Monday evening, January 14, 2013, at the Woodside Village Care Center following an extended illness.
On February 18, 1938, Ella was born in Calhoun, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Elzy and Mary (Murphy) Finchman.
Ella married Leon Murphy on November 11, 1955. They shared over 57 years of marriage, raising five children along the way.
Ella’s main focus was taking care of her children as they grew up, but she also worked outside of the home as a cook and janitor.
In her spare time, she spent many hours crocheting, knitting, and watching her favorite television show, Dallas. Ella was a master baker, creating the best pies and cakes. In recent years at Woodside Village, she enjoyed playing Bingo.
Throughout her life, Ella enjoyed going on hunting and fishing trips with her family. During the last few years of her time at Woodside, Ella always looked forward to the times she was able to leave and go visit her family at home. On New Year ’s Day she was able to do just that and enjoyed a very special day with her family.
Ella will always be remembered as a strong willed woman. She was very loving and caring, but at the same time let it be known she was the boss of the family. You didn’t tell her, she told you!
Ella will be dearly missed by her husband, Leon, of Mount Gilead; two sons: Sunney (Sherry) Murphy of Mount Gilead, Roger (Pam Johnson) Murphy of Orlando, FL; a daughter, Norma (Mike) Sherman of Mount Gilead; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ella was preceded in death by a son, John W. “Bub” Murphy; a daughter, Carol Ann Murphy; six brothers and 5 sisters.
The Murphy family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating her life will be held there on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dave Aiken officiating. Burial will follow in Worden Cemetery.
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the Woodside Village Activity Fund and may be made in care of the funeral home.
