James Albert Morris, 90, of the Meeker area

James Albert Morris age 90 of the Meeker area, Ohio passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013 at his residence.

He was born June 28, 1922 in McKay, Ohio to the late Willard and Mary (Shaffer) Morris.

On March 29, 1946, he married Pearl L. (Crabtree) and she preceded him in death on September 24, 1993.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, James enlisted in the U. S. Navy serving four years during WWII. He entered into the service September 19, 1942 and was stationed in Great Lakes, IL. He was then sent to Dutch Harbor, Alaska as a firefighter; then assigned to the USS Gallatin, transporting troops in their efforts to retake the Islands in the South Pacific. He received the American Theatre, Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Liberation, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.

After the service he was employed at D.C.S.C. in Columbus, Ohio as a firefighter for 31 years, he retired in 1979 as Assistant Chief.

James attended Meeker United Methodist Church and was a life member of V.F.W. Post #8054. In his spare time he loved sleeping and was an avid fisherman and camper up until his death.

He is survived by his children, Ben (Diana) Morris of Marion, Oh., Vickie(Steve) Rowe of Morral, Oh., Carla (Chuck) Grau of Bucyrus, Oh., Christa (Jon) Adams of LaRue, Oh., seven grandchilden, Jodi (Tracy) Smith, Jennifer Morris, Jill (Doug) Rowland, James (Lori) Rowland, Julie Burris, Jana (Bob) Quart, Janelle (Jim) Vance, ten great grandchildren, one brother, Jack Morris of Loudonville, Oh., two sisters, Rita Simon of Newark, Oh., Fern Fletcher of Newark, Oh., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Wayne, Dick and Dewey Morris and two sisters, Evelyn Kendall and Rita Smith.

Funeral services for James will be held Monday, January 21, 2013 @ 1:30 PM at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home with Rev. Dwight Hord officiating. Burial will follow at Frame Cemetery/Meeker with full military honors conducted by the United Veterans Council of Marion County. Visitation will be Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 5 – 8 PM at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home.
