Richard D. Slack, 76, of Sparta

Richard D. Slack, age 76 of Sparta passed away Sunday morning, January 20, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital following a two month illness.

He was born on July 5, 1936 in Morrow County to the late Fern A. and Norine (Hulse) Slack. A graduate of Sparta High School in 1954, he lived his entire life in Sparta, a community he dearly loved.  Richard married his grade school sweetheart in 1955; Barbara (Porter). Together they shared in the joys and tribulations of life and were blessed with a wonderful family.

Richard was working as a plaster tradesman, when tragedy struck on November 15, 1959 with a fall that changed his life forever. Through his courage, strength and the support of others he endured. Richard never complained and overcame. He went on to serve as treasurer for Highland School System for 25 years.

Unwavering, he was steadfast and true. Fiercely loyal he was understanding and a friend to all. Humorous and witty he enjoyed hunting and fishing.  With a green thumb he had a passion for gardening and growing both flowers and vegetables.

He was a longtime member of the Sparta United Methodist Church and had served as a 4-H adviser. Home was where his heart was. He was an avid fan of sports, especially Highland athletics and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was at his best spending time with his treasured family and especially his grandchildren. His strength and courage shown in spite of difficulty shall be his long lasting legacy.

He shall be remembered for his good deeds, as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend….which he truly was. In Richards words….”Free At Last”.

Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife and confidante of 57 years: Barbara (Porter), children: Debbie (Dave) Higgins, Steve (Lora) Slack, Bill (Jennifer) Deckling all of Marengo, Linda (Brad) Hall of Mt. Vernon, 10 Grandchildren, 7 Great-grandchildren, Sister: Judy K. Vernon, extended members of the Porter family, nieces, nephews, and friends.
